I met Craig in South Africa’s beautiful Sabi Sands game reserve a few years ago, during his time working as a safari guide there. I imminently noticed two things about him:
1) He was very handsome
2) He was very polite
What I was yet to find out, however, was how wildly passionate Craig is about conserving Africa’s wilderness and how talented he is with a camera in his hand (and a pen for that matter). Now talent is one thing… but being determined and hard-working enough to share that talent with others in the form of an amazing printed work is a whole new kind of wonderful. I’m so proud that this friend of mine has published a book showcasing his wonderful photography, narrated by passion-filled words about Africa. Although set in 6 different African countries, much of this cofee-table-style book was inspired by Craig’s work for the Smithsonian Institution in Gabon, Central Africa, where he took on a role training eco- guides and had the privilege of access to spectacular unmapped wilderness areas.
“Before my arrival in Gabon, I had heard legends of a place without human footprints, where abundant ocean meets unblemished forest, clear lagoons snake through unpeopled savanna, and mountains ring out with the voices of great apes. Reflecting back on that chapter of my life, it seems surreal to me even now. I did not believe such a place could still exist, untarnished by man.”
“From nature I learned patience, I learned to be silent, I learnt to observe more keenly and I learnt to always ask “why”. I learned to accept change, but to work hard to prepare for it. Nature has taught me to embrace complexity, but to value simplicity. Living for prolonged periods in wild places, I observed the nuanced changing of the seasons, death and rebirth, and the ebb and flow of time. I began to see my life as tiny but still significant within a continuous story without end. Though during this time I sought to learn about the world around me, my most important discoveries were actually about the world inside me.”
Wild Life in Pictures is the perfect new addition to the library or lounge of any safari lodge or simply an awesome Christmas present for any wildlife-lover! Well done Craig!
